SpellBee International Makes Significant Strides in Promoting Human Security

Originally started as a project of the Human Security for All (HS4A) campaign, SpellBee International has made significant strides in promoting the Human Security for All (HS4A) initiative through its fluency-building programs, extending its impact across educational institutions in India and reaching millions of people.

Over a period of six months from March to August 2024, they developed a comprehensive booklet that incorporated over 100 fluency-building activities that revolve around key human security topics.

Their ongoing outreach campaign to schools continues and has been instrumental in raising awareness and facilitating the adoption of HS4A programs in educational institutions.

As part of the Strategic Language Enhancement Programme, SpellBee’s newly enrolled 50,000 students are now engaging with HS4A concepts, integrated into their curriculum and lesson plans on fluency development. This effort ensures that human security topics are woven into students’ educational journeys, helping them to be prepared as future leaders in different fields.

To date, the organization has distributed one million brochures with a short message and the HS4A logo directly into the hands of students, with an estimated readership extending to four million family members. This outreach amplifies the message of human security beyond schools, fostering a broader understanding of HS4A principles within the community.

The fluency program was active in 600 schools in 2024 with participation now extended to 1,000 schools, with an average of 1,000 students per school. SpellBee estimates that by the end of the academic year 2025-26, one million students will be directly engaged in the HS4A fluency program.

Part of the strategy takes advantage of global days that celebrate awareness around social issues. They have promoted HS4A across 500+ schools for certain United Nations observance days, such as World Food Day (October 16), World Kindness Day (November 13) and Human Rights Day (December 10).

These observance days are critical touchpoints for aligning educational content with global priorities.

HS4A activities for Friendship Day and Indian Independence Day included student-driven projects such as paintings, artwork, poetry, essays, speeches, and video recordings, sparking creativity while fostering awareness of human security. These works got assessed and certified and given awards too.

The initiative went beyond schools, too. In July, 2024, 397 participants from more than 300 schools across India, representing over 12 states, saw Garry Jacobs, President and CEO of the World Academy of Art & Science (WAAS), delivering an inspiring address on the mission and significance of HS4A. Ms. Devakanni Subramanian, CEO of SpellBee International, highlighted initiatives promoting HS4A across India, which received excellent feedback from the educators.

In August, 248 participants from more than 200 schools, Ms. Janani Harish, Secretary General of WAAS, presented on HS4A’s global impact and its relevance in today’s world. Ms. Subramanian elaborated on the integration of HS4A into SpellBee International’s curriculum, emphasizing the essential skills being nurtured through this initiative.

Currently there are 80 SpellBee International members working on various roles (content, design, marketing, coaching, finance, printing, and logistics), devoting part of their time to HS4A. An exclusive team of five people work on HS4A, with plans to expand to 20 team members and 1,000 volunteers, freelancers, and ambassadors(one school, one teacher, 1,000 schools)

As part of their campaign to reach one million students by 2025-26, SpellBee sent out physical mailers and brochures by courier in September to 10,000 schools that serve around six million students. These materials include the HS4A logo and human security guidelines, and called for active participation along with language development and fluency building content.
